William Rhuland fought in the Second Battle of Passchendaele (26 October - 10 November 1917) which was part of the larger Third Battle of Ypres (July - November 1917) in Belgium. His battalion fought in the second stage of the Second Battle of Passchedaele during which William Rhuland was killed in action on 30 October 1917. The object of the battle was to capture the village of Passchendale which was achieved at great cost: 884 men killed, 1429 wounded. (Gerald W.L.
