A graduate of the Dalhousie University Medical School of Halifax, Niova Scotia in 1949, Lloyd Hirtle joined the Immigration Medical, Quarantine and Sick Mariners Sercice of the Department of National Health and Welfare as amedical officer ar Pier 21 in Halifax, where he spent nine years attending the health of new Canadians and mariners during the height of the post Second World War immigration period. Following three years posted in Ottawa, Ontario, he returned to Halifax as Region Director of Medical Services for the Atlantic Provinces until his retirement in 1980. As an active member of the Bayers Road Baptist Church in Halifax, her served in roles including deacon, treasurer, registrar and moderator over 47 years. In his earlier years, he was associated with the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia.57
