Roy Swinamer served in the United States Navy, including duty on the U.S.S. Wasp. He was a graduate of the American Television Institute in Chicago, Illinois. His career in broadcasting began as television first began. First as a cameraman with comedian Ernie Kovacs and comedienne Edie Adams, and later as a producer and director in Philadelphia, Reading, Lebanon and Altoona, Pennsylvania markets. In 1960, Roy Swinamer moved to Binghamton, New York to join Triangle Publications' WNBF-TV, the forerunner of WBNG-TV. There, he directed broadcasts of Triplets Baseball, local news and furthered his career in children's television programming as a skilled puppeteer through his alter ego, IGY. For the next dozen years, IGY joined local TV hosts "Admiral Appleby" and Mr. Willoby" by delighting local television audiences on each of the CBS, NBC and ABC affiliates of Binghamton, as well as through personal appearances throughout the Southern Tier of Upstate New York. He was an early director of a young Regis Philbin, and of John Bartholomew Tucker at WJZ-TV's "People Are Talking" Show in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1965, Roy Swinamer met and married Wanda (Beardsley) Sands, and the two of them followed a mutual passion to form the advertising agency R.V. Wanda Beardsley graduated in 1947 from the Wilson Hospital School of Nursing in Johnson City, New York. She was predeceased by her former husband, Eugene Edward Sands, (1970), and her husband of 40 years, Roy Vincent Swinamer (2005). Wanda Swinamer had three illustrious careers. Her first, and lifetime career, was nursing. After graduation, she was employed at the Binghamton Psychiatric Center in Binghamton, New York, and then she went on to private duty. She was also a former director of the Red Cross in Binghamton, Delivery Charge Nurse at Binghamton General Hospital, and Supervisor at the Vestal Nursing Home. During her nursing career, she was also involved with television in the early 1960’s and 1970’s, as an on air personality, for the Southern Tier Educational Television Association, (STETA), that eventually became our WSKG in Binghamton. She was also an on air personality, “Miss Wanda”, for both the Admiral Appleby and IGY program on WNBF-TV, and on the Mr. Willoby and IGY program on WBJA-TV. She also pursued a marketing career, and after taking several courses at Broome Technical Community College, she and Roy, opened RVSA Advertising in February, 1969, still proudly operating today, with 2nd and 3rd generations at hand. Bill Swinamer attended Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts studying automotive mechanics and graduated in 1951. After graduating, he worked at M.I.T. Labs in Cambridge. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving as an aircraft mechanic on C117s (cargo) and C130s (air support) nicknamed “Hercules” as well as B29 and B50 bombers. After his service in the U.Ss Air Force he was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant in 1957. After the military, he worked as a tool design engineer for several years before ultimately taking an early retirement in 1992 from Digital Equipment Corporation of Maynard, Massachusetts.
