Merrill Tanner went to sea at an early age and served as a crew member on the original schooner Bluenose. He was employed over the years with National Sea Products Ltd., Lunenburg, Nova Scotia working with the Company for 21 years after which he went to work with Keiths Breweries in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He later returned to National Sea Products until his retirement. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg where he served as an Elder and on the Board of Managers. Merrill Tanner was also a member of Unity Lodge No. 4 of the Masonic Order.

Joan Knickle worked for 38 years as a receptionist for Dr. Rayfield Wood in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and with Dr. David Dowse at the Lunenburg Medical Centre. She retired, retiring in the early 1990s. She was an active member St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg, where she was a member of the senior choir and was choir director of the junior choir. Joan Knickle was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.
