The 1881 Canadian census records a Croswait family at Salisbury, Westmorland Co., New Brunswick. The family were of Irish origins. There was a 15-year-old daughter "Manah", probably a mis-reading of Maria.
In the death records of three of her children, Maria Crossthwaite came from Moncton, New Brunswick; Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; and simply New Brunswick.

Maria Salsman had given birth to nine children by 1900 of whom six were still living. They rented their home. His eleven-year-old niece Alice Salsman lived in the household. Elmer Salsman was a chauffeur for a meat store. William Salsman immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1885 and was naturalized in 1890.
