Alfred Sawler was raised on a mixed farm in Cambridge, Kings County, Nova Scotia where he learned to enjoy machinery, animals, and growing crops. During the Second World War, he had mechanical training in Kingston and London, Ontario while in the Canadian Army. He served overseas in England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands as a first class motor vehicle fitter with the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers. After the war he owned and operated a garage in Cambridge, Kings County until retiring with ill health. He was an active member of the Cambridge United Baptist Church as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, trustee, and choir member. In 1983 he moved to Berwick, Nova Scotia where he was a member of the Legion, the Citizen Advocacy, the Veterans Club, Antique Engine Club, and the Berwick food Bank.68

Beatrice M. Saltzman died from a fractured skull as the result of being struck by an automobile.
