Claire Saltzman was a proud graduate of the Somerville, Massachusetts High School Class of 1947 where she attended reunions with her classmates. Her graduating class of 1949 from the Bentley School of Finance and Accounting (now Bentley University) in Waltham, Massachusetts was one of the first to matriculate women. Besides working in her field, Claire was a trained opera singer and sang in opera productions in Worcester and Boston. She shared her strong soprano voice at many weddings, church, and other events.
In 1955, Claire Saltzman met her husband Alfred (Fred) Syiek while commuting via train from Boston to Worcester, Massachusets; and so began a love affair that lasted 59 years. They were married in Worcester in January, 1956 and went on to raise a family in Wilmington and Andover, Massachusetts. She was a fierce proponent of the notion that each member of her family could independently find their way in the world and she proudly shared their accomplishments.
Claire Syiek was a passionate gardener and spent endless hours in her backyard growing a shade garden. She shared her knowledge and her plants freely. She was a long-time member of the Andover Garden Club and an accredited flower show judge and also served as the Northern District Director of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. She ran many shows including the 2010 Topsfield Fair Flower Show and entered many arrangements over the years. Her other love was swimming. She swam laps at the Andover YMCA for many years where she made dear lifelong friends. She also was a kind and loyal neighbor.91

Fred Syiek was a proud graduate of Worcester North High School, class of 1942, and Worcester Polytech Institute (W.P.I.) class of 1948 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in. electrical engineering. In 1955, Fred met his loving wife Claire (Saltzman) while commuting via train from Worcester, Massachusetts to Boston, Massachusetts; and so began a love affair that lasted 59 years until his wife's passing in 2014. They were married in Worcester in January, 1956, and went on to raise a family in Wilmington and Andover, Massachusetts.
Fred Syiek began and ended his career with the New England Telephone Company in Boston. I n 1948 he used his mathematical skills as a Depreciation Engineer, and as he was recognized for his strong analytical skills, he was promoted to Marketing Supervisor for Economic Analysis for communication services. When he retired in 1982, he was the District Staff Manager responsible for performance and profitability of key telephone systems. Throughout his career he continued to pursue education in costing models for public utilities, taking courses at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and Stanford University in Stanford, California.
Fred Syiek lived a life of selfless service not only to his family, but to his country and to his community. He put his college education on hold and voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. He was sent to boot camp training in Atlantic City, New Jersey and then to University of Chicago in Illinois for two phases of Meteorology School to learn to give flight clearance for military planes. He later trained in Clinton, Ontario, Canada in radar. He ended his Second World WarI service at Camp Pinedale in California as a radio repairman. He later joined the reserves sponsored by the New England Telephone Co. and was called to active duty in the 313th Signal Battalion in 1950. He was assigned to the 8075 Signal Unit in Seoul, Korea, as a Field Radio Officer. He spent five years in the military in total, and for his service he was awarded a Second World War Victory Medal, an American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, a Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. Fred Syiek was a number's man and he could always recite his military serial number 31262848 and the number on his jeep from Korea 20113011.
After retirement, Fred Syiek volunteered two years as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau and 21 years (1988-2008) as an AARP Tax Aide at the Lawrence Senior Center in Lawrence, Massachusetts, helping the elderly with their tax returns.91
