After graduating from Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in Northwood, New Hampshire, Edward Gates enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. In September 1942, he was sent overseas to Molesworth Air Base, Huntingdonshire, England, where he served as an aerial photographer and photographic technician with the 8th Air Force, 303 Bomb Group until June 1945. While stationed there he met and married Nancy Graham, who predeceased him in 1984. After returning to the Sstates in 1945, he lived in Liberty, Maine until 1947, when he moved to Worcester, Massachusetts and then Leicester, Massachusetts. I n 1986 he moved to Deerfield, New Hampshire where he was remarried to Connie Linnell Ambrose, moving to Northwood, New Hampshire in 1993 where he resided until his death. He worked at Reed and Prince, Harrington Richardson and Montrose Cable in Worcester, Massachusetts, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Northwood Congregational Church, Joseph J. Jeffery Memorial Post No. 7217 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Northwood Historical Society. He was also a member of the Original Son’s of the American Legion Orchestra from 1938-1941.
