Floyd Hiltz enlisted in the United States Army on 23 July 1917 in the First World War. He was assigned to Company I, 50th Infantry Battalioon, Second Division. Hre trained at Fort Slocum, New York from 29 July 1917 to 9 August 1917 and Syracuse, New York from 9 August 1917 to 9 September 1917 before departing from Hoboken, New Jersey for France on 9 September 1917. He was transferred to Company I, 23rd Infantry Battalioon, Second Division. He fought in the Battle of Belleau Wood near Chateau Thierry, Ainsne, France where he was wounded or killed in action on 1 July 1918. His date of death was also reported as 29 July 1918. This is the report of his sister Florence Hiltz Geary on 28 July 1923.143
