Herbert Hyson attended the Maritime Business College in Halifax, Nova Scotia after which he returned to Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia to work in his family’s grocery store. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. After the War, he then resumed working at the family store. Deeply interested in Mahone Bay’s history, he was a member of the Mahone Bay Founder’s Society. He was also active in the Royal Canadian Legion and the local Masonic lodge.
